3 Feb 2011: The Borough revisited
Philip Marriage writes: The Borough has certainly changed in the 45 years since I left HMSO's St Stephen's Press in Pocock Street. The whole area is so much smarter, from Southwark Cathedral just south of the Thames and the exotic Borough Market with foods from all over the world, past London Bridge and southwards down Borough High Street to St George the Martyr opposite the Borough Underground Station. Even the short walk down Lant Street past The Gladstone, onto Sawyer Street and its smartly painted red Fire Station and thence to Pocock Street revealed a gentrification which surprised me. The Ship on Borough High Street offered my wife and I a fulfilling dinner as it has done for some years for those attending the annual HMSO 'Second Tuesday in December Society'. But towering over the whole area is the emerging Shard building changing the skyline forever.
